Carbon Imprint Meter Many have heard or know about global warming, carbon emissions and greenhouse gases but have you ever wondered what you can do about it? Can you have a part in staling the dramatic climate changes that threaten all living things on earth? We all need to be concerned about how much energy we consume and from what source that energy comes from. The reason is – what some scientists have termed as our - “Carbon Imprint” or simply stated as how much Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is pumped into our atmosphere from power plants or other sources that burn fossil fuels. Carbon dioxide that’s released into the atmosphere as a result of burning fossil fuels is what changes our weather which in turn melts earth's polar ice caps. The carbon dioxide becomes trapped, allowing more of the heat from the sun to remain in Earth’s atmosphere the infamous green house effect. An excess of carbon dioxide occurs when more emissions are released into the atmosphere than can be consumed by CO2 absorbing forests and oceans. Elevated CO2 levels in oceans are already killing reefs, fish and other ocean life. Other side effects not commonly thought of but directly resulting from global warming include increased flooding and expanding desert areas that causes more intense weather disasters such as hurricanes and tornadoes. Doing your part can be as simple as making a plan to reduce the amount of energy you or your family uses and to be less wasteful. Yes energy conservation starts at home. Installing Advanced Energy Panels over inefficient windows is one inexpensive step you can take. The US Department of Energy says that the average home when tightened up and properly insulated can save most homeowners 20 – 50% on heating and cooling bills. Using EnergyStar appliances also contributes mightily by saving electricity so supporting manufacturers who meet the Energy Star standards makes sense. There are quite a number of other ways to cut down carbon emissions, including carpooling, regular car maintenance, flying less, combining trips, making your home more energy efficient and switching to renewable energy sources sometimes supported by your regional electric or gas companies. Of these a growing number of people have been supporting hydro, solar and wind power which are clean sources. Sustainable is a term you will see more and more. Many manufacturers want to jump on this band wagon to promote their environmentally friendly products. You may wonder what exactly does sustainable mean. “Sustainable” can basically include any product that is manufactured using less natural resources or that in its actual use helps us waste less. It is a fancy new way to say “Green” or “Renewable”. Hydro power, solar power, wind power or any product that saves you electricity or cuts fuel consumption is sustainable. The average American produces 9.44 tons of carbon dioxide annually. That’s the emissions equivalent of cutting and burning all of the trees that would fit into a football field. Every reduction we make helps our planet and everything that lives on it. One of our goals at Advanced Energy Panels is to drive awareness and slow the amount of emissions by using and developing new emerging technologies.
